Project at Hospital Universitario, Monterrey in Mexico now underway

Thu, 10/22/2009

We are delighted to announce the launch of another project to add to our expanding portfolio of projects.  Our latest project is based in north-east Mexico in Monterrey.  The Hospital Universitario is the largest tertiary hospital in the region and serves a population of around 6 million people.

We have twinned the Hospital Universitario with the Cook Children’s Medical Centre in Fort Worth, Texas, USA with the aim of improving survival rates and increasing access to child cancer treatment for Mexico’s poorest children.   Despite Mexico having a per capita income of US$10,000 there is a vast disparity in the distribution of income with around 40% of Mexicans living below the poverty line.  There is very little state-funded medical care for these people and the result is that around half of the 4,500 children diagnosed with cancer annually in Mexico struggle to access treatment.

The project will create a centre of excellence in paediatric oncology at the Hospital Universitario with the support of the twinning partnership and improve access to child cancer treatment for some of Mexico’s poorest children.
