Advocacy in Ghana

Yesterday we had a meeting with Dr. Ebenezer Appian-Denkyira Director General of Ghana Health service, Dr. Gilbert Buckle CEO of Korle Bu Hospital, Dennis Ocansey, Deputy Programme Manager, Non Communicable Disease Control Unit and Prof. Lorna Renner Paediatric Oncologist and medical lead for the programme we are supporting in Ghana. During this meeting , we discussed the importance of promoting resources for childhood cancer and other non-communicable diseases, as well as the need to influence WHO and donors to treat these diseases with increased urgency.

As Malaria and other infectious disease deaths in Ghana have reduced dramatically over recent years it is now the time to tackle the unnecessary deaths from childhood cancer. We also discussed influencing the Ghanaian National Health Insurance Agency to include childhood cancer drugs among the drugs they provide for free. At present the cost of drugs is a significant problem for many poor families in Ghana despite the support World Child Cancer and other supporting organisations give.

This programme in Ghana is funded with UK Aid from the UK government.
