World Child Cancer's Programme Lead for Ghana, Professor Lorna Renner, has received The First Lady’s Excellence Award for Medicine/Health Care Delivery.
Prof. Renner, was one of the eight women recognised by the First Lady on International Women’s day for excellence in various fields.
Her citation reads:
“A Professor, Doctor, Lecturer and Childrens’ advocate. Professor, you have made your mark as a lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Medicine & Dentistry and the head of the Paediatric Oncology Unit at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
You have exhibited extreme dedication to the diagnosis, treatment and care of children with cancer in Ghana and are an active campaigner and advocate of the cause, working tirelessly to raise resources to support the treatment of childhood cancers.
In the process you have managed to bring childhood cancers to the attention and funding of many”
Through the hard work of Professor Lorna Renner and the team at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, which is supported by World Child Cancer, survival rates for some cancers have tripled from 20% to 60%.
