We have learned with great shock and sadness of the untimely death of Prof. Jacob Plange-Rhule, Rector of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.
We had the privilege to meet Prof. Plange-Rhule for the first time in 2018 when World Child Cancer had the opportunity to create a partnership with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. This was aimed at strengthening the Paediatric Oncology Fellowship Program led by them, with a grant provided by the UBS Optimus Foundation.
Prof. Plange-Rhule was crucial in designing and implementing a very bold and unique program, open to paediatricians from Ghana, other countries in West Africa and beyond. Thanks to his support in the first year we have been able to enrol nine paediatric oncology fellows from Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia. He was a real believer in the transformative power of specialised medical education and he truly understood our vision of a world where every child with cancer has a right to the best treatment and care. Prof. Plange-Rhule was also an incredibly kind and approachable man. He always made us feel at home in his office at the College and we would very much look forward to seeing him.
Our heart goes out to the community of health care professionals in Ghana and West Africa as we have lost a great leader and our deepest sympathy goes to Prof. Plange-Rhule’s family. May his kind soul rest in perfect peace.
